Update: I actually made a run an it! FLIPPINGTHEFUCKOUT in my little 12x12 workshop yesterday afternoon thinking I was going to take it home.

All of the low bidders bowed out and I was prepared for up to two what I call “ real bidders” which are just people who don’t bid until the final seconds because it’s kinda dumb to bid any earlier (although I’m plenty guilty of doing this ). These are also bidders who have “real bid” history. If it’s someone’s first crack at BaT or they have just cast out low bids here and there... they won’t go very deep.

Only one stepped in! “This is my car buddy, I’m way dumber than you”, I thought. Then I read the bidders username and did a quick googly cyberstalk...” FRICK it’s a dealer”, I muttered to my wife who had joined in for the last minute excitement . Doubt crept in and I stopped suddenly . I didn’t feel ANY of that with the last one and it was a few more thousand miles an an ocean further away.

That guy could have and probably would have bid me well into the teens (still a deal on a rust free running roundie) but BaT takes 10% from the buyer, I pay another 6% to the state of PA and then I’d have to truck it home which we can easily call 3-4k ....That car is slow anyway w a trash paint job:)

I Popped a beer and walked out back to join my wife and kiddo in the garden. Got an un solicited hug and kiss from my kiddo and life is grand.

Side note: A few nights ago I blindly popped a whole fortune cookie in my mouth (weird right? I have never done this) . I was waiting to pull out the fortune...THERE WAS NO FORTUNE!!!! The google says it’s good luck so I thought I’d win that car for REAL cheap lol. Obviously I didn’t but  this morning I got a reply from someone I have been buying parts for the E46 from. He said he was dumping a bunch of “vintage” parts. I said “got any 02' door cards?” He said, “No, but I have a whole car!” I’m going to keep the deets private for now, but maybe an update after the 4th...

Linkitylink

Car: *exists

Me: “hey there fella, I like the cut of your jib”

Car: *continues existing

Me: “I can take ya home, park ya next to the green machine and it will be like Christmas every day! And we can drive and laugh and drive till your tires are spent! Then well get NEW TIRES!”

Car: *still existing, motionless

Me: “Seems like you like the sound of that!!!”

I’d put real seats in it and a classy AF wood wheel and drive the fuck out it.

Not sure, but the rod bearings & throttle actuators - two common points of failure - have already been addressed.

Interested to see where this ends up.

I wanted that car and almost made an account and put money on it. But I’m not really ready for classic car ownership. I have decided I want one of these when I can realistically have a classic in my stable.

$10,800, plus fees, taxes, and shipping to OH puts that one over my wallet’s pain threshold.

Yeah the add ons really hurt if for regular guys like us. With the 1502 I was able to skate out of the BaT fee because the auction didn’t meet reserve. The seller and I made a side deal. It was a wash because it was twice as expensive to ship, but still nice.

What are some good resources for these? I like the boxy styling of that 68 as compared to the more angled nose of the later models. I think I saw a 72 somewhere else online that is a runner but has loads of body issues.

Do you know of any other sites that would sell these and places that would be good to import them through?

I also should probably try to arrange a drive in one at some point seeing as I've never done that. I would hate to go through the whole process of getting one only to find I hate it.

Does BaT not have autobid? You know, set your max bid and it will automatically increase the bid by the increment you set.

https://www.bmw2002faq.com/

68'-73' Round tail (more expensive)

74'-76' square tail

You want a body that is in good shape as a hard #1 with chassis as a close second, unless you’re a skilled metal worker. The mechanicals are so sim ple I almost/do get happy tears when I look underneath/in the bay. Interior and rubber bits from BMW are the most expensive things.

Facebook marketplace is ok, craigslist is bad, the 2002 forum is good but the format isn’t. Also and here me out here BaT, contrary to popular belief is good! You can get a good deal! Particularly on 2002's because they is always at least one for sale. Big money guys HATE the ones even with small issues. Foreign location /no reserve cars are where it’s at.

“I also should probably try to arrange a drive in one at some point seeing as I’ve never done that. I would hate to go through the whole process of getting one only to find I hate it.”

Sure I guess that is a possibility, but that might be tough to arrange. Here is what I can tell you about the dri ve and experience. I have owned a bunch of cool/fast cars (wrx, wrx sti, E90m3, e46 m3, audi s3). I have been lucky enough to have wheel time behind almost ever E chassis BMW and I have driven counteless exotics via being a dickhead kid working as a valet. I wheeled some guys 360 to the gas station and back...It SCREAMS just an unbelievable noise. All eyes are on you if you like that sort of thing but its kind of odd. S ome in awe, some scoffing obviously thinking nasty things. Here I am a 19 year old valet just wheeling someone elses car...

None of that touches the feeling of whipping that little Bimmer around. The car is just pleased as punch to be driven. Every part of the drive you can feel, touch, smell, and taste. I can flick it into a turn and just put my damn ed foot through the floor. It’s so easy to get it way out and get it right back. I’ve driven other vintage cars MG/Triumph/Austin Heale y. They’re old and cool but “Sunday Drivers”. I’ve DDed mine for months at a time. I get the same amount of attention that I described with the Ferrari, but its all love. People yelling “FUCK YEAH” out of every sort of cars window from every walk of life. The 2002 community is unbelievably generous. I have had other owners invite me out to their shop over a simple facebook post! I’ve gone and now were friends!

Obviously biased here, and my car is far from stock enhancing the experience. Still I highly recommend them to anyone looking to step into a vintage car or to anyone who just wants to feel real good when they drive , haha.

Awesome.

My current daily, a 16 GTI SE 6MT with the Performance package is admittedly perfectly fine for a daily. But that’s part of the problem. It’s only just fine. Sure it’s amazingly capable, but only gets exciting at speeds that I would get arrested for. So it feels to me like it simply exists. It’s fun, but only when breaking the law or on a track. It’s fast, but not fast enough to be scary. So either I need loads more power or much less.

I love the classic three-box styling of these and that they aren’t fast. I want to be able to drive like my pants are filled with insects as often as possible and I can’t do that with my GTI.

And these strike me as approachable for ownership and personalization. Whereas classic Porsches are out of my budget and even if I could get one, I’d have to worry about all the purists getting angry for driving it  wrong, or on a day ending in Y, etc.

Yea it’s crazy you can’t really drive anything new, hard without asking for trouble. Absolutely slow car fast adds to the fun. The 02 community has the snotty purists too, you’ll see arguments about the “snorkel” on the Tii’s that will go on for pages... However those guys keep the driver level cars attainable. I have met dozens of owners since I got mine and I have only met one or two with concourse quality cars. They’re all the same, it’s just another perfect factory example in their perfect little collection. Everybody else will invite you over for beer to see what parts yall can trade.

Yeah, you know, the maximum amount of money you can spend before your wife files for divorce, or perhaps the amount sitting in the checking account that you can’t exceed without getting a loan. Maybe it’s the maximum you’re willing to pay for a particular item.

On eBay, I’ll find an item that has a buy it now price that I think is fair, then set my max bid on another auction for the same item  about 10% lower than that.

Kinja'd!!! Tripper > TheRealBicycleBuck
06/24/2020 at 14:46

Kinja'd!!!0

For small things that works but for cars its all in the moment for me. After each bid I ask myself, “How do you feel about xyz car for the price you just bid?” When the answer is somewhere in between “ I’m not sure” , and “bad” I stop .

The answer can quickly change though . I was ready to bid to 13 against a bidder or two. The problem is once you get there you (I) tend to keep going. I was pretty sure he would push me over that by a good measure, where as two seconds earlier I was pretty sure whoever else showed up wouldn’t even make me go that high. So my 13 became 10550. Annnd I’m looking at other cars

Kinja'd!!! TheRealBicycleBuck > Tripper

My budget doesn’t let me do that. It’s more about what I can afford all-in. An extra grand or two? Nope. I set a number that is a hard stop.

Mine doesn’t either but that extra 1-2k you speak of I will hustle up real quick, or buffer with a credit card if I have to . I also re-confirm my wife’s comfort level every $2500 or so .

When I agreed to buy the 1502, I had no shipping company, no customs plans, and I didn’t want to part with any cash as we were in the middle of an addition on our house and ya never know...So I took out a personal loan...should have seen the guys face when I told him I was just going to wire it to a stranger on the internet. Then I billed ALL of my side clients at once, haha. I sold a bike, a gun, some old tools, and worked a few weekends of valet during the holidays to pay for shipping, customs, tax, registration blahblahblah. Then I put a silly amount into it when it arrived which I slapped on a 0% interest credit card haha. Then I sold the Grom and made a lucky investment in fish oil to cover that cost over a few weeks.

the butts in my pants never wear out because I’ m always flying by them.

Our tolerance for risk is very different! I plan for months or even years before I make the leap on a big purchase. The one exception was our house. I had a weekend to make a decision or I was going to end up renting. This was after Katrina and the housing market was extremely tight.
